TDIF: Randall Cunningham Outruns Tarkenton

Philadelphia Eagles, TCIPF Staff, This Day in NFL History, Top 10

On this date in football – Oct. 18, 1992 – Philadelphia Eagles QB Randall Cunningham surpassed Fran Tarkenton’s all-time quarterback rushing record of 3,674 yards.  Given nicknames such as “Rocket Man” and “The Ultimate Weapon,” Cunningham solidified his spot in the record book with a 39-yard run against the Washington Redskins.  His mobility and athleticism changed the quarterback position, giving way to a new style of play that is still prevalent in many current NFL quarterbacks.

Here’s a look back at some of Cunningham’s Houdini-like escapes from the pocket, as originally presented in Top Ten Elusive Runners.
