This Day in Football: Red Grange’s Birthday

Chicago Bears, This Day in NFL History, Top 100

Red Grange’s place among the NFL’s greatest has as much to do with his off-the-field persona as his on-the-field skills.  After gaining stardom at the University of Illinois, Grange brought notoriety to pro football in a time when the college game was the more popular form of pigskin.  Nicknamed “The Galloping Ghost” for his speed and elusiveness, Grange helped grow the NFL’s popularity, paving the way for it to become a modern day colossus of American sports and culture.

Grange passed away in January of 1991, but today we honor his birthday, June 13, with a look back at him from The Top 100 Greatest Players, on which he was voted number forty-eight.
