On this day in 1996, the NFL announced that Baltimore would be granted an NFL franchise for the first time since 1983.

Cleveland Browns owner Art Modell decided to move his franchise to Baltimore, and his new team was later named the Ravens. The Browns were ‘deactivated’ for three years, until a new stadium was built for them. They returned in 1999.
