On this day in 1997, Barry Sanders became just the third player in NFL history to break the 2,000 yard rushing mark in a single season, finishing with 2,053 yards.
Sanders ran for 184 yards and a touchdown against the Jets to pass O.J. Simpson for second on the all-time list, and falling just 52 yards shy of Eric Dickerson’s single-season record. Jamal Lewis later passed Sanders’ mark by 13 yards in 2003, setting Sanders back to third on the list.
