The Jets gained an NFL record 39 first downs in a single game against the Dolphins on this day in 1988.

It was a wild one as Dan Marino threw five touchdown passes, but the Jets’ Irish Rifles – Pat Ryan and Ken O’Brien – combined to throw four touchdowns as New York outscored Miami, 38-34.

Stud receivers for both teams, including Al Toon and Mark Clayton, helped the two sides combine for 1,037 yards of total offense and 59 first downs.
