Mike Ditka: The Saints Wirings

A Football Life, Mic'd Up, New Orleans Saints

Mike Ditka’s 3 year reign in New Orleans failed to produce a single winning season, and the Saints were a combined 15-33 while Da Coach ran the show. Ditka, of course, is not the only Super Bowl champion head coach to wash out in an attempt to recapture past glory with a different team. Hank Stram, George Seifert, and Tom Flores were others who raised The Lombardi Trophy, then failed to recapture the magic with another franchise.

Iron Mike was “miked up” twice while coaching the Saints — in 1998, and again in 1999. While MIKE DITKA: A FOOTBALL LIFE touches briefly upon the Saints years, there was a treasure trove of wiring material that wound up on the proverbial cutting room floor. Here, then, is the “Best of Ditka – Wired For Sound.”. These clips, most of them unseen – and unheard — until now, suggest that while he coached with the same fire and fury that made him famous in Chicago, these qualities couldn’t prevent a flameout in New Orleans.
