“DEXTER MANLEY: A FOOTBALL LIFE”
PREMIERES FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 25TH, 8PM/ET ON NFL NETWORK
By Matt Malabonga
In the upcoming episode of “A Football Life,” NFL Films explores Dexter Manley, a legendary defensive end for the Washington Redskins whose promising career was haunted by his constant battle with drug addiction. Winning two Super Bowls during the 80s with the Redskins, Manley was a tour de force on the line, dominating opponents on the field while endearing himself to Redskins fans everywhere. This success, however, was a distraction from the struggles that plagued him before, during, and after football.
Throughout his life, Dexter Manley had many obstacles to overcome, from a rough childhood to dealing with illiteracy and drug addiction into adulthood. His charm and energy hid building chaos in his life outside of football, which led to a ban from the NFL in 1991. His post-football life was a difficult time for him as well, as he struggled to cope with the loss of his passion.
Despite all that he has gone through, Dexter Manley is now 9 years sober, pushing himself every day to take control of his life. His is a story of redemption, and a non-stop drive to achieve what others thought could not be done. Though the battle continues, Dexter Manley is always willing to put up a fight. To see how it’s all unfolded, catch “Dexter Manley: A Football Life” Friday, September 25that 8PM/ET on NFL Network.
