This past December, we featured the 2012 Madison Tecmo Super Bowl Tournament in an NFL Films documentary. Tournament co-founder Chet Holzbauer – known at the time as the best player to never win Madison – was finally able to take home the title.
The 2013 Madison Tournament – Tecmo IX “Marino Royale” – was played this past weekend, and it was a rerun of Tecmo VIII. Chet won the title again — the first repeat winner in nine tourneys — and he did it thanks to this play.
Other notes from this year’s tournament:
-After starting the tournament 6-0, Mort was eliminated in the Elite 8 when his Lions fell to the Chargers, 14-10.
-Former best in world Sobhi was bounced in the 2nd round. His 39-7 record at Madison still ranks as the best winning percentage in the tournament’s history.
-The Vogt brothers were a combined 8-0 before getting bounced in the round of 32. Chris saw his Packers fall to the Browns, 21-20; Matt’s Bengals fell 10-7 to the Bears. Third brother Jimmy did not attend the tournament.
-The tournament field featured 224 of the world’s best players – up from 176 participants a year ago.
Chet Holzbauer has now won 35 of his last 36 games while claiming four straight championships (Tecmo VIII, Ohio V, Nebraska III, Tecmo IX). He is being called the LeBron James of Tecmo.
