On this date in football sixty-one years ago, the Los Angeles Rams and New York Yankees combined for 595 rushing yards – the most rushing yards in an NFL game. It was a field day for both running backs as Yankees running back George Taliaferro rushed for 166 of New York’s 224 rushing yards – including a 65-yard TD run – while Rams running back Dan Towler rushed for 155 of Los Angeles’ 371 rushing yards – including a 69-yard scamper for six. At the end of the day, Towler had the last smile, as the Rams sealed a 48-21 win.
The week 8 victory was one of eight wins during Los Angeles’ 1951 season, who later that year went on to defeat the Cleveland Browns in the NFL Championship Game. Here’s a look back at that 1951 NFL Championship Game.
