Hall of Fame quarterback Christian Adolph “Sonny” Jurgensen III celebrates his 78th birthday today. Drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in 1957, Jurgensen went on to win his only championship in 1960 with the Eagles, but as a backup. After being traded to the Redskins, he made the most of his opportunity in Washington, becoming a five-time Pro Bowler and earning three NFL individual passing titles. Even in the midst of a starting quarterback controversy between him and Billy Kilmer, which Kilmer eventually won, many fans still sported “I Love Sonny” bumper stickers on their vehicles.
Here’s a look back at the storied career of Sonny Jurgensen, as originally presented on NFL Films Presents.
