Memorial Day was founded in the upstate New York town of Waterloo, only a few hours east of where Bob Kalsu was a Buffalo Bills rookie in 1968. Following that season, Kalsu was placed on active duty and sent to Vietnam, where in July, 1970 he died in action.
Kalsu would be the only active NFL player killed in the Vietnam War. Today, we remember him and all members of the armed forces who have given their lives in service to America. Here’s a look back at the Kalsu story as originally presented in 1999 on NFL Films Presents.
