Seventy-nine years ago today John Constantine Unitas was born in Pittsburgh, PA. After playing college football at Louisville, Johnny U was selected by his hometown Steelers in the 9th round of the 1955 NFL Draft, only to be released prior to the season. After playing semipro football for $6 a game, Unitas had a tryout with the Baltimore Colts – for whom he would become one of the greatest, most accomplished players in NFL history. In 1979, the 3-time World Champion (’58, ’59, Super Bowl V) was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Today, on what would have been his 79th birthday, we celebrate the great Johnny U.
