This Day in Football: February 27

Chicago Bears, Mike Counos, Tales from the Vault, This Day in NFL History

On this day one year ago, defensive tackle Stephen Paea set an NFL Scouting Combine record in the bench press event, lifting 225 pounds 49 times.

Paea played his college football at Oregon State and was selected to the 2011 Senior Bowl. However, at the first practice he tore the lateral meniscus in his right knee and was unable to play in the college all-star game. The injury also limited him at the Combine, though not in the bench press test. Paea was selected in the second round of the 2011 NFL Draft by the Chicago Bears, with whom he signed a four-year contract. He played in 11 games in 2011.

Here’s a look back at Paea’s record breaking bench press, as originally presented on NFL Total Access.
